Wow. Atticus hadn’t expected such an honest and revealing answer to his question, which had been asked half in fun.
“I like you a lot, too,” he said softly, letting his genuine feelings show in his voice.
They held each other for a while, and then Atticus remembered his stupid work project and wondered if Roger would be able to help.
“You said you’re a part owner here. I’m supposed to organize a team-bonding event for our department. Food and drink on a budget and a speaker and entertainment. Do you have some kind of list of speakers who do that sort of shit? I repeat. It’s on a budget. This isn’t some political party with bottomless funding.”
Roger sat up and moved down the couch a little way so he could angle his body and still face Atticus.
“We have a conference room here. We’ve hosted some of those kinds of events. But only for small groups. The room only holds fifty. How many people would you need to cater for?”
“It’s our entire department. About forty.”
Roger smiled. “We might be able to quote for it. What’s the budget?”
“Twenty per person for food, another twenty for beverages, and then there’s money for the speaker or entertainment and for incidentals.”
“Fuck. That’s not much. You won’t get any kind of sit-down meal for that. We could do trays of finger food. Mini hot dogs on sticks, mini pizzas, that sort of thing. The drinks would be mostly beer and soda though.”
“I think we’re lucky not to get just water. But it’s the speaker and entertainment that bothers me most.”
“There’s a chick we’ve worked with before. She was in some of Pete’s classes for a couple of years, but she’s older and graduated last year. She’s a motivational speaker and quite good. But apart from the band, I don’t know about entertainment. This is a gay bar. The kind of entertainers we know likely wouldn’t be appropriate.”
Every bad boy instinct inside Atticus stood up and begged to be let run free. “Maybe not. What kind of entertainers do you know?”
“Several gay singers, a gay guitarist who does really good Spanish songs, a gay stripper—”
“Tell me about the stripper. Is he any good?”
“He’s a tease. He ends up with the tiniest thong on so you never see the best bit. But his act is really good. Teasing, like I said. I can’t imagine the men in your office would want that.”
“My boss certainly wouldn’t. But the women would. There are far more women than men in the group. Close to three quarters of the staff. How much would these people cost?”
“If they did, say, fifteen minutes each, would that be enough?”
“I haven’t worked out the timeline. I guess everyone would stand around talking for a while, and then the boss would want to speak and say how wonderful he is to have organized this for us. Then some food, then the entertainment, some more food, maybe two, two and a half hours all up do you think?”
Atticus watched as Roger frowned, obviously calculating how everything would work.
